Demand Driven Solution — Microlearning in the Mining Sector

Training Works created a strategic partnership with Agnico Eagle, Signal Gold (formerly Anaconda Mining), and the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) to develop a new microlearning delivery model that would support demand-driven safety skills development in the mining industry.

Agnico Eagle is a senior Canadian gold mining company that has produced precious metals since 1957. Its operating mines are located in Canada, Finland, and Mexico, with exploration activities in each of these countries as well as in the United States and Sweden.

Signal Gold is a TSX and OTCQX-listed gold mining, development, and exploration company, focused in Atlantic Canada.

This project will revolutionize training within the mining industry, allowing employees to receive moment-in-time learning that is relevant and specific to their positions, through their mobile devices.

The participants will receive a nationally recognized safety micro-credential from MiHR upon completion of the program.

Adhering to National Occupational Standards

Stakeholder consultation and research informed the development of the safety microlearning program, while also taking into account MiHR’s National Occupational Standards.

Behaviour Based Training

Behaviour-based safety was identified as the major focus for the project. The intended outcome is to increase overall behaviour change through a robust microlearning development program and on-the-job coaching/mentoring program to further reinforce knowledge transfer.

Execution Challenges

The project is underway in two rural communities with 186 employees – Baie Verte, NL (Signal Gold — 86 Employees), and the Kivalliq District of NU (Agnico Eagle — 100 Employees).

Due to the remote locations, it is challenging to bring forth robust training programs without large-scale expenditures and lost productivity due to time spent away from the job to participate in the training.

Anticipated Outcomes

In addition to an overall behaviour change, it is anticipated that organizational productivity will increase, safety incident rates will decrease, and the organization will see bottom-line growth due to the anticipated ROI.
