In 2017, Signal Gold engaged Training Works to complete a comprehensive training needs assessment on their operations in Baie Verte, NL. This assessment identified the core competencies, and the corresponding behaviours required to facilitate employee success and operational excellence within Signal Gold.

This process saw the identification of five key training priorities and the conception of a research-based approach to skills development to determine the best delivery model for training in the workplace.

An employee that has a full range of skill sets and understands the bigger picture of what we are trying to accomplish at [Signal Gold] will enable the Company to execute, at the highest level, on its goals and initiatives.

The value of having a highly skilled, well trained and motivated workforce will ultimately accrue to our shareholders and other stakeholders.

This ongoing project has led to the creation of a fully-linked skills development system that is aligned with the strategic direction of the organization and supports change, innovation, and productivity.

Step 1
Competency Modelling

The identified competencies were structured into positional competency models that are housed in the Signal Gold Leadership Model.

These models were used to guide and tailor training for Signal Gold Corporate University, which serves as the backbone to Signal Gold’s learning culture and leads the company's key capability to foster an adaptive, innovative, and knowledge-based workforce.

Step 2
Training Recommendations and Development

New courseware and training modules were developed and implemented across various subject areas – in engaging and interactive formats, and with the help of multiple delivery models (online, blended, and in-class).

An evaluation framework was put in place to determine what delivery model worked best, based on organizational needs.

In areas where suitable training already existed, training modules were licensed and modified to better suit the newly developed university.

Results

Over the past three years, Training Works has worked with Signal Gold to implement a learning management system (LMS) to make learning easier, faster, and more effective. Working as the engine of Signal Gold University, the LMS serves as the organization’s training hub and facilitates organizational communication between employees, managers, and leadership.
